Water is life—and it connects us all.

Water is a shared resource that belongs to the community, and when managed wisely, can meet community needs today and for generations to come.

  • Repair the Honokōhau Ditch System

  • Increase water storage

  • Build R1 (reclaimed water) Transmission Line to Kapalua

Two people holding hands while washing each other's hands with water outdoors, blurred background with trees.

Why are we doing this?

Our goal is to match each water type to its best use.

Working with all stakeholders:

  • Honokōhau Valley residents

  • Public trust users such as farmers and homeowners

  • Future water users such as Department of Hawaiian Home Lands

  • Reasonable and beneficial users

  • Government bodies and private entities

Proposed Water Solutions

We propose a public-private partnership with the State and County where repairs to the ditch system are done with private funds and then the repaired water system is donated to the State or County for public trust ownership. This solution is privately funded, with minimal to no cost to taxpayers and will likely result in a faster resolution of water issues.

These are our proposed solutions:

  • Repair the Honokohau Ditch System

  • Increase water storage

  • Build R1 (reclaimed water) Transmission Line to Kapalua

Four large metal pipelines lying on the ground with stands securing them, in an outdoor setting with grass on the side.

Solution 1: Repair the Honokōhau Ditch

Working with the State Agribusiness Development Corporation (ADC)

  • Acquire the ditch

  • Repair the ditch

  • Donate to ADC

Solution 2: Increase Water Storage

Working with the Commission on Water Resource Management (CWRM) and Maui Department of Water Supply

  • Analyze the capacity for necessary water storage

  • Identify optimum locations for storage

  • Invest in the reuse of dormant reservoirs and/or build new water storage tanks/reservoirs

Solution 3: Build R1 (reclaimed water) Transmission Line to Kapalua

Working with Maui County Department of Environmental Management

  • Analyze best location for transmission line

  • Acquire easements and permits

  • Build transmission line
